NATIONAL GUILD OF PIANO TEACHERS

The National Guild of Piano Teachers, founded in 1929 by Dr. Irl Allison, is the teacher division of the American College of Musicians and is a non-profit organization.

The Aim has been to establish goals and awards for piano students of all grades, from the early beginner to the adult performer.  These goals are obtained through the measurement of individual merit and not through competitive contests.

The Guild has a standardized piano curriculum with emphasis on American composers, but which encompasses the best in piano literature.  Students are classified according to their advancement at the time of the audition, not according to their age or the length of time they have studied.

Performance is graded on accuracy, continuity, rhythm, pedaling, phrasing, dynamics, tempo, tone, interpretation, style, and technique.  Awards such as certificates, fraternity pins, diplomas, and medals are given.

Teachers’ membership dues include a subscription to Piano Guild Notes.  Teachers’ minimum age for membership is 18 years. There is a code of ethics for teachers.
